Gain More Twitter Followers
So you’ve just launched your Twitter page to the world and you’re eager and excited to interact with thousands of fans and followers and possibly get a customer or two out of it all. In other words you need ways to gain more Twitter followers.
So where do you start?
Let’s jump in, roll up our sleeves and get dirty!
Twitter, as with any social media platform help you create reputation and reputation indicates you are respected; and in turn you will naturally attract more followers. More followers suggests influencer status in your field of interest, and if you are a business this can really help create sales conversions.
One of the biggest failings of anyone setting out on Twitter is not putting the effort into their page.
Your profile page is where people will come to find out more about you, what you do and even what you look like!
So lets get dirty and craft the perfect Twitter profile page.
As you can see from the graphic above, numbered 1 to 5, these are the most IMPORTANT areas that will help you begin to get followers straight away.
1. Add a profile picture
No one likes eggs! By this I mean people who don’t add a profile picture have an egg for a profile picture automatically assigned to them by Twitter.
Anyone who is a serious user of Twitter knows that these kind of accounts with an egg for a profile picture can be fake or spam accounts and as such they give them a very wide berth and wont follow them. After all the person hasn’t a clue who the account is and whether it’s real.
In fact 3rd party programs like statusbrew have the facility to help a user detect “egg” profiles and remove them from their following list for them, which could mean followers abandoning you in their droves if you don’t put the effort in to adding a profile picture.
As for guidelines on what type of profile picture to use, my recommendation is to think out of the box and be creative.
My profile picture is of a famous emoji over my face, indicating that while I am a professional in what I do, I am also a down to earth guy and people connect with this and it helps with followers.
Some professional people I know have a photo taken in a suit or dress to look more formal for their industry, some have family photo’s showing that they are professional in their field but at the same time family focused.
Some business owners I know use their brand logo as their profile picture as their customers will identify with this and it will again lead to followers due to the trust in the brand.
2. Use the like facility and list facility
These are 2 great ways to help you to gain new followers without having to follow other people.
See a tweet you like, then show your appreciation of the person tweeting it and give it a like. This is sometimes known to prompt the person who posted the tweet to click on your profile to see who you are and notice you don’t follow them but share the same interests so they may follow you. This is a great indirect way of gaining followers.
Lists are another great way to attract new followers.
How? you may ask.. well it’s like this.
Every minute of the day Twitter can be a very “noisy” place to hang out on with the constant tweets hitting your feed. In the early days this wont bother you, but as your followers / followings grow, so do the tweets and trying to keep up to date with the ones that matter can be hard without creating lists.
Lists allow you to add someone to them so you can click on the list and only see tweets from people you have added to the list, instantly cutting out the Twitter “noise”.
This can be turned into a great way of gaining followers by adding people to your lists. They will see that you have added them to your list and in turn click on who you are and see that you aren’t following them and if there is a relevant interest there, they may follow you. It works. Use flattering descriptions for your lists as well as the person you are adding will see the name of the list you are adding them to. For instance you could call one of your lists SEO Influencers (If you are in the SEO niche) and when you add someone to that list it would notify them that you have added them to the list SEO Influencers, making them feel important and increase the chances of them following you. Flattery sometimes does get you everywhere!
3. Add a cover picture / photo
This is an absolute must!
Just as with no profile picture, not having a cover photo can lead to a very low follow rate.
Again, as with the profile picture, be creative. This is the main picture that tells your story so use it. The perfect size for your cover picture is 1500px x 500px any smaller and when stretched on different desktop sizes it will pixelate beyond belief and again could have an adverse affect on the amount of followers you get.
Do yourself a great justice and add one. You won’t regret it.
4.Consider a pinned tweet
OK, throughout this guide we have been talking about the dirty ways to get you followers, however this is assuming that you are actually tweeting yourself.
No one likes a quiet tweeter and not many people will follow you if you dont tweet.. after all people follow you to hear what you have to say and offer to the Twitter community. With this in mind, If you have a particular tweet that you think will be of interest to anyone visiting your profile, then pin it to the top! This will then keep the tweet at the top over and above all of your other tweets.
Pinned tweets can be of anything… It could be a tweet about a promotion you have going, a tweet about something in your industry that demonstrates your expertise… it could be anything, but make it relevant and interesting otherwise there is no point.
Pinned tweets of the right content can also gain you new followers and if it is of interest, you will see it get liked and shared many times over which in turn can lead to new followers coming your way.
5. Get your Bio right!
Your bio is probably one of the most important things you could spend time on and one that can really get you followers.
So many people cut corners on this important and necessary part of their Twitter setup, either neglecting to fill one in or have a very poorly written bio.
Your bio is where other potential followers (and future business) find out who you are, what you do etc.
You have 160 characters to make it punchy and engaging and let people know who you are.
Make it stand out and use relevant keywords and even hashtags to help you get found when people search for those keywords.
Under this make sure you add your location! People often search by location so ensure you can be found.
Most important is to add your website or blog address as Twitter drives traffic to you!
